What is FibroScan®?

FibroScan® is a painless, non-invasive procedure that is used to determine the liver health of a patient in mere minutes. At Arizona Liver Health, we provide a free scan to each patient to quickly and efficiently determine the status of the liver.

FibroScan® measures scarring and fatty tissue in the liver. A mechanical shear wave, produced through the probe of the scan, measures the liver’s stiffness. This process is often called Liver Ultrasonographic Elastography. What can you expect from such a scan? The steps involved are as follows:

1. A pain-free, non-invasive probe presses into the skin near a patient’s rib cage. The probe then measures a 3 cm3 volume of tissue from the liver for further evaluation.
2. A mechanical shear wave flows into the liver. The examination volume is 100 times the size of a typical biopsy, minimizing sampling error.
3. Stiffness and attenuation levels of the liver are then measured by the vibrations that this procedure creates. This allows for the determination of the fat levels that exist within a patient’s liver tissue. Any results are shared with the patient’s doctor so further evaluation can be completed.
