State-of-the-Art FibroScan® Technology

At our clinic, we use FibroScan® to determine patients’ liver status. FibroScan® is a non-invasive method of liver analysis that measures scarring and fatty infiltration in the liver. Something known as a shear wave is produced through the scan’s probe in order to measure the stiffness of the liver. This process is also commonly known as Liver Ultrasonographic Elastography. The steps involved in the procedure are as follows:

1. A probe painlessly and non-invasively presses against the skin near the rib cage. It measures a 3 cm3 volume of liver tissue for evaluation.
2. A mechanical shear wave flows through the patient’s liver. The examination volume minimizes sampling error, as it is 100 times the size of a typical liver biopsy.
3. The vibrations produced capture the stiffness and attenuation levels of the liver. This helps to determine the extent of fat levels that exist within the liver’s tissue. These results are then shared with your doctor so a diagnosis can be made.
